Using Quadruple Lenses to probe the Structure of the Lensing Galaxy
نویسنده
چکیده
We show here that quadruple lenses can be useful laboratories to probe whether the potential of the lensing galaxy is purely elliptical or whether an additional distortion is present in the deflector plane. For this test we only have to know the relative image positions of the quadruple lens system and the (relative) center of light position of the lensing galaxy. Furthermore we introduce new methods which easily allow us to determine the location (rotation angle relative to the image positions) of the major axis of the lensing galaxy. In due course we can determine the parity of the four images as well. We apply these methods to the 8 currently known quadruple lenses and find that in the case of MG 0414+0534, CLASS 1608+656 and HST 12531–2914 it is impossible to accommodate the relative image positions and the galaxy position with any elliptical potential whereas the other five cases can be described very well with a simple elliptical potential. This method will have important impacts for χ-fits and the reconstruction of galaxy models for quadruple lenses. Probing the Structure of Lensing Galaxies with Quadruple Lenses: The Effect of the “External” Shear
We study a general elliptical potential of the form ψ(x + y/q) (0 < q ≤ 1) plus an additional shear (with an arbitrary direction) as models for the observed quadruple lenses. It is shown that a minimum additional shear is needed even just to reproduce the observed positions alone. We also obtain the dependence of the axial ratio, q, on the orientation of the major axis of potential. A general r...

We study the statistics of large-separation gravitational lens systems produced by non-spherical halos in the Cold Dark Matter (CDM) model. Specifically, we examine how the triaxiality of CDM halos affects the overall lensing probabilities and the relative numbers of different image configurations (double, quadruple, and naked cusp lenses). We find that triaxiality significantly enhances lensin...

B1422+231 and PG1115+080 are gravitational lens systems producing quadruple QSO images where there is real promise that time delays can constrain the Hubble constant. In addition, the lensing galaxies are both part of groups which can play an important role in modelling the lens potential. This article reports redshifts for the lensing galaxies and three neighboring galaxies in each of the two ...
متن کاملRotation in Gravitational Lenses
Gravitational lensing deflects light. A single lens deflector can only shear images, but cannot induce rotations. Multiple lens planes can induce rotations. Such rotations can be observed in quadruply imaged sources, and can be used to distinguish between two proposed solutions of the flux anomaly problem: substructures in lensing galaxies vs large scale structure. We predict the expected amoun...
